Fake news has become something of a heated issue in
many discussions today. While most can agree that false information is a
serious problem in the age of social media, there is still much discussion as
to the largest contributors to this problem. A common argument put forward is
that fake news has become automated. The discussion around this surge of
automated fake news has primarily been focused on a particular company located
in Saint Petersburg, Russia. This company, formally called the “Internet
Research Agency” is known to have engaged in several misinformation campaigns
in the United States. Adrian Chen of The
New York Times writes that it is “known for employing hundreds of Russians
to post pro-Kremlin propaganda online under fake identities.” Chen goes on to
say that, “it has aggressively deployed against political opponents at home,
Russia’s perceived enemies abroad.” [1 image, 1 link, 2 quotations, 142 words]
