Gaming History

Are video games fake news? Let's break it down:
  • What is fake news? Information that is false.
  • Can you obtain information from video games? Yes.
  • Do people treat video game information as accurate? Yes.
  • Can that information be false? Yes.
This does not mean that every video game is inherently fake news, but many video games have "glaring historical errors." A new breed of history called "alternative history" came about through the falsification of historical events within video games. In detail, historical events were changed (dramatically or not) to make the game more interesting. But if we consider the fact that some people do take information from mostly-accurate games such as Assasin's Creed, does that mean video games are fake news if they're false? I think so, especially since the term "fake news" has been broadened to anything public that has incorrect information. Although this is a reach, in an era where social media is quick to call out inaccuracies, it's important not to carve out too many exceptions, lest we forget the harm in spreading fake news.
