Now Illegal to Smoke with Children in the Car

News headline warns that starting on October 1, 2016, it is illegal to smoke in a car with children present. According to Now8News, “the law is changing to protect children and young people from the dangers of secondhand smoke. Both the driver and the smoker in the car could be fined as much as $80.” This news story is completely false and an example of the kinds of fake news stories we are exposed to. There is no federal law stating that smoking in a car with a child is illegal. Some local governments and states have proposed bans but still, it’s not illegal in the U.S.
