United States Returning Puerto Rico to Spain

Claims of the United States returning Puerto Rico to Spain started off by a report that was published in the Puerto Rican newspaper El Nuevo Dia. It was said to be a secret negotiation between Spain and the United States. A part of the report stated, "the deal, which has been negotiated in secret for at least two years, is not yet official, but it has the approval of President Donald Trump of the United States and Mariano Rajoy of Spain and certain technical details are all that remain to finalize".

According to Snopes, "whatever surface plausibility the article may have had stemmed from strained relations between the United States and Puerto Rico in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in September 2017". El Nuevo Dia is a reputable daily newspaper, but the article was falsified and there was a disclaimer at the bottom of  the article stating it to be a prank in honor of a holiday that is celebrated called The Day of the Holy Innocents.
