“Can you believe everything you read? Not always,” writes Kate
Boatner, a contributor for National Geographic for Kids. Teaching kids how to critically
think for themselves when reading or watching a story from the media, Boatner
provides questions to ask along with insightful reasoning, when deciding if
what the kids are taking in is “real or fake.”
“Does the story come from a newspaper, magazine, or website
you’ve heard of?”
“Is just one newspaper, magazine, or website reporting the
story?”
“Is the story missing key information?”
Along with these introductory questions and follow-up by
Boatner, the website provides video clips from the show Real or Fake. These educational video clips I believe, provide a fun
example of headlines that might seem fake, can actually be real, and headlines
that seem real, can actually be fake!
What is the point to this madness?
To teach children that research is true knowledge, and not to just take something
at face value. [1 image, 2 links, 4 quotations, 159 words]
