Fake beauty hacks are nothing new: from anti-aging cream to the 1 weird trick to get 10-day abs. The beauty world is full of "magic pill articles" addressed to people who are desperate for a new look fast. So why do so many people fall for this? What's the secret to making articles like this so credible-looking?

The key is to sound scientific and to add in morsels of truth. For example, the myth that coconut oil and baking soda will get rid of wrinkles. The truth within this?  Coconut oil "can indeed diminish the appearance of wrinkles on skin" but it "can also be extremely drying and irritating if used too often." Not telling the whole truth about the mixture can cause the exact opposite effect than what you're expecting. In order to debunk these myths you must break down each and every component of every beauty mixture. If Item A helps, but Item B hurts then the mixture won't work, but if both Items A and B help, then the beauty hack might work. But research is hard to do, which explains why so many people trust science that sounds credible. [1 photo, 3 links, 3 quotes, 193 words]
