Facebook users are circulating another round of
unfounded warnings to be aware of cash back fraud at retail stores. Here is how
the scam supposedly works: A customer purchases an item with a debit card, then
the cashier selects cash back without the customer’s consent and pockets the
money. This piece of fake news has been around since 2004 and Snopes has already debunked it. Snopes investigated multiple Walmart stores and reassures customers
that “not one single case did we find a store with a checkout system that
allowed cashiers to initiate cash back transactions . . . without any
involvement, knowledge, or approval on the customer’s part.” Any story involving
fraud is something to keep an eye out for, but it seems the cash back scam isn’t
something anyone needs to worry about. [1 image, 1 link, 1 quotation, 134 words]
