Another anti-gun-control meme is misdirecting people with
facts that do not tell the whole story. The meme claims that “in 1982, the
Kennesaw City Council unanimously passed a law requiring heads of households to
own at least one firearm with ammunition.” The meme goes on to cite this law as
being responsible for lowering crime rates. Snopes dug into this story and
found that although the law is real, gun “ownership wasn’t truly compulsory in Kennesaw.” The law was meant to be symbolic and never enforceable. The meme
also failed to mention the law’s exemption for those “who suffer a physical or mental disability . . . or who conscientiously oppose maintaining firearms as a result of beliefs or religious doctrine, or persons convicted of a felony.”
This part of the law proves that it is unenforceable and not meant to be taken
literally. [1 image, 1 quotation, 2 links, 144 words]
