Shock and outrage erupted on Facebook from the news that a
school in Tennessee banned the American flag. According to Snopes, “Facebook
pages and disinformation sites recirculated variations of an outdated and
exaggerated claim.” This story began when a Tennessee school banned flying
flags from vehicles after a student came to school flying the Confederate flag.
This story eventually evolved into a tale about the school banning the American
flag. The truth is, however, the school already clarified that “the American flag could be flown from vehicles if it was properly displayed.” This type of
false news is easily spread because it angers people into sharing the story
with others. It is best to step back in these situations and fact check news
before letting emotions spread fake news. [1 image, 2 links, 2 quotations, 129
